Abstract
The technique of photoelastic determination of stresses in structural members using bakelite as the transparent medium is described. The mechanical properties of this material and the process of annealing it for the removal of the internal stresses are given. The shearing stresses in keys and keyways are investigated. It is shown that it is desirable to round the corners of the keyway, with a corresponding chamfering of the key. The use of color fringes called isochromatics for the determination of shearing stresses has been found very helpful and is highly recommended.
