The aim of this paper is to identify fracture-critical problems in the offshore industry and to match them with fracture mechanics techniques emanating from applications in other areas. To set the stage, a review is made of fracture mechanics problems in the offshore structural technology. The fracture mechanics analysis procedures suitable for these problems are then discussed with an emphasis on fracture parameter calculation methods and crack instability analysis procedures. Recommendations are provided for the implementation of more efficient fracture mechanics methods for offshore structural applications.
